Private pay rises by 3%, public by 0%

The latest analysis of pay settlements from IDSPay.co.uk shows that a clear gap has emerged between the levels of pay awards in the public and private sectors. The median pay award for the private sector in the three months to April is 3%, while in the public sector it is zero. Read more

Manufacturing the recovery, by Alastair Hatchett

There were further signs of economic recovery in the private sector average earnings figures released by the Office for National Statistics on April 21. The strongest earnings growth came in manufacturing, where the rate of growth was 4.4% in February 2010. Public vs private pay: no comparison, by Alastair Hatchett

The new Average Weekly Earnings (AWE) data were released on 20 January 2010, and were immediately misinterpreted by a host of journalists. The main point made by a number of newspapers was that earnings growth in the public sector was rising at 3.8 per cent as against -0.1 in the private sector, all in the year to November 2009.
